Westinghouse |  Brand History

Before electricity was something we all took for granted, Westinghouse was busy actually making it possible. The company championed alternating current, the system that would go on to power homes and cities across the country, in a fierce battle against Thomas Edison's direct-current empire. That rivalry was dramatic enough to become a feature film, The Current War, worth a watch if you want the backstory (streaming on Netflix, Apple TV, and others).

But AC power was just the beginning. Westinghouse built the first hydroelectric generator at Niagara Falls. It created the "We Can Do It" poster that became one of the most recognizable images of the 20th century. It powered the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine. And when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, the camera broadcasting that moment to the world was Westinghouse, it's still sitting on the lunar surface today. Across more than a century, the company kept doing the same thing: pushing the boundary of what was possible in power, lighting, appliances, and the connected home.

So we were obviously honored when they called and asked us to create a Brand History video that brings that legacy to life. Shot on location in both the United States and China, and built around 2D animation our team created entirely from scratch, the film weaves these milestones into a single narrative, the story of a brand that has spent generations betting on innovation. We also brought back Westinghouse's 1960s slogan, "You Can Be Sure," because some promises don't age.

SCOPE: Pre-Production, Shooting, Photography, Scouting, Casting, Global Coordination, 2D Animation, Editing, Script Writing, VoiceOver.

The Result

The result: a happy client and a global campaign delivered exactly as promised. Early on, a competing agency told the CMO that a project of this scope, with original animation, multiple shoot days, models, photography, script writing, VO, editing, and various locations spanning the U.S. and China, simply couldn't be done within budget.

Schwartzy saw it differently.

Through smart planning, a trusted network of collaborators and locations, and a meticulous focus on where every dollar went… we delivered the full vision without compromising quality. The client was thrilled, and said she was admittedly pleasantly surprised that we were able to keep everything within budget. Apparently, the competing agency was left wondering how we pulled it off. That's the kinda thing we actually pride ourselves on and can bring to ambitious, complex projects, and it's why brands trust us and continue working with us.
